The Isarauen nature reserve, south of the Isarring, encompasses many areas that were originally located near the riverbed of the Isar. Over the centuries, these areas became settled by humans and the riverbed moved to its current position. The nature reserve includes the English Garden, the Frühlingsanlagen and the Flaucheranlagen on both banks of the river, Hellabrunn, Maria Einsiedel, Floßlände and Hinterbrühl. The reserve also protects the Ice-Age slopes of the Isar. These include the Maximiliansanlagen along the eastern bank, the steep slope on Hochstraße and on the Giesinger Berg, on Harlachinger Straße, and continuing below the Menterschwaige until the Großhesseloher Brücke. Above the western bank of the Isar, the slopes along Wolfratshauser Straße south of the Schmiedberg in Thalkirchen are included in the nature reserve, including the high bank along Ludwigshöher Straße, ending at Josephinenstraße in Solln.
Special features
South of the Braunauer Eisenbahnbrücke, parts of the Isarauen nature reserve are also inside the Fauna-Flora-Habitat conservation area, known as “Oberes Isartal”, and are therefore part of the European network of network of nature reserves, “Natura 2000”. The nature reserve follows the Isar upstream as far as Mittenwald.
Endangerment and threats
The nature reserve is legally protected. It is important to observe the rules of this protection and to treat nature with respect to ensure the long-term diversity of the habitat.
