General bathing ban
For safety reasons, bathing is generally prohibited near river engineering facilities, particularly weirs, power plants, waterfalls and drops. These pose a mortal danger (holes!).
Water level Isar
Please inform yourself about the current water level in advance. The definitive information source is the Pegel Isar München, which you will find at https://www.hnd.bayern.de/pegel/isar/muenchen-16005701?s=09.Please note that the average water temperature of the Isar is approx. 14°C, even in the summer.
Please be considerate of other river users.
Holes! Danger zone!
Holes pose a considerable mortal danger, as they can pull in people, animals, boats and objects. They are often difficult to detect and quickly become a deadly trap. If you become caught in a hole, you will be pulled underwater, churned around like in a washing machine, and have little chance to save yourself. The risk of drowning is extremely high. Swimming near holes is therefore prohibited! Protect your own life and that of others, who may risk their lives in an attempt to rescue you, and stay away from holes.
Boating in the Werkkanal
When boating on the Werkkanal and the raft landing stage, rafts have priority and boats must give way.Bridges
Jumping from bridges into the Isar and the Werkkanal is prohibited and poses a danger to life and limb. There is a considerable risk of injury or death when diving into the water. Driftwood and other dangerous objects may be found below the surface, which are indetectable to divers. Divers not only risk their own lives, but that of swimmers and boaters below the bridge.Information about the Eisbach in the English Garden
The Eisbach flows along the outer eastern edge of the English Garden. Swimming, bathing, drifting in the current, and boating are prohibited. Caution, danger of death! The high flow velocity, waterfalls, whirlpools, and undercurrents have repeatedly led to fatal accidents.
Swimming in the Eisbach wave is also prohibited. Surfing on the Eisbach wave is permitted under certain use regulations. The city of Munich has issued a general ruling in the interest of public safety.
Surfing is permitted between 5:30 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Surfing is permitted with a selfreleasing leash or without a leash. Surfing is only permitted for experienced and physically fit surfers who are at least 14 years old. For 14 and 15 year old surfers, the presence of an adult supervisor who is a skilled and experienced surfer is required. For surfers aged 16 and up, surfing must be supervised by another surfer aged 16 or older. Supervisors must monitor from the shore to ensure that nothing problematic happens and will be there to help and alert emergency services in case of an emergency (buddy principle). No surfers under age 14 are permitted. Surf at your own risk. The warning signs with skulls indicate the general prohibition of swimming / bathing in and boating on the Eisbach. There is a considerable risk of injury or death.
